The Majestic Elk
Elk viewing is a popular pastime drawing visitors from all over Pennsylvania, out-of-state, and locals alike. And fortunately, the “Elk Capitol of Pennsylvania” or Benezette is a short drive from the Maple Shade Mansion!
Elk can be seen anytime of the year but are more visible during their breeding season or rut which begins in early September and lasts through October. The best time to see the majestic animals is at dusk and dawn. However, during the rut, the elk are more active throughout the day as well.
It’s an incredible experience to witness the elk mating ritual. The bull, massive and quite regal, invites his harem of 15 to 20 female elk (aka cows) to begin breeding by making a distinctive ‘bugle’ sound that begins as a low bellow and crescendos to a kind of squealing or loud whistle. This is followed by several grunts. The cows are receptive to breeding and dutifully remain in their harem for the duration of the breeding season. The bull elk has earned his dominance by fighting off lesser bulls for the opportunity to breed with the cows and if you’re lucky, you may even witness a sparring match between two bulls as they lock their massive antlers and fight for leadership.
The Winslow Hill Viewing Area is a perfect spot for viewing the elk. It has ample parking and a walk-up viewing area overlooking a large meadow where elk are often found.
Binoculars and a camera are a must!
